Module 3 – Curriculum
Introduction – What to Teach
This module is designed to assist you in thinking about adult learners' purposes for learning and the information and skills they will need to accomplish their goals. As an adult educator, you want to work with students to identify such information and skills and then be able to access appropriate materials for teaching them. Students want the content of instruction to address their purposes for learning; they want to understand how curriculum will strengthen their learning skills and how to participate in the selection of learning content. Presented in this module is a survey of the types of curriculum content commonly delivered to adult literacy learners, as well as methods and resources for accessing already developed curricula. As you continue in your professional development, you are likely to find even more resources to assist you in finding appropriate curricula to support adult literacy learners effectively.
Initial Self-Assessment:
Before you begin, we’d like to give you the opportunity to review what you already know about this topic using a pre-survey. On the survey we ask you to take a moment to rate yourself on your comfort level and familiarity with the topics presented in this module. [There is also a pre-survey for the entire course, Basics of Adult Literacy Education. If you wish to take the overall course pre-survey, click here.]
Clicking on the link below will open a text document in a separate browser window.
You may print it and write your answers, or type your answers directly into the digital document. If you choose to type directly in the document, don’t forget to print or save your work for your records (to a floppy, hard drive, or other drive local to you) when you have completed the survey.
