Module 3 – Curriculum

Welcome to Module #3 – Curriculum

In this module, we will examine the common purposes adults have for improving their literacy skills and the types of information that will help them. Completing this module will help you determine what skills, among the variety of curriculum content that could be taught,  to include in the plan for instruction to meet your learners’ needs, as well as provide you with some resources for literacy content already developed by others.

Module Structure:

The module is divided into the topics you see on the left. You may work through them in order or, based on the results of your Basics of Adult Literacy Education course pre-survey, you may pick and choose which ones to review.

During this module, you will be asked to be an active participant in the learning process. You’ll have an opportunity to react to real-life situations and express your opinions and ideas. You will also have the opportunity to consider the implications of what you are learning for your teaching situation.

An Online Learning Tool:

There is a paper-based worksheet that will guide you through each of the modules’ topics. It is a place for you to take notes, as well as a place to process and think about what you are learning. At the end of the module, this worksheet will be a document that can serve as a resource for you as you begin (or continue with) your instruction with adult literacy learners. Click on the link below to open the worksheet as a text document in a separate browser window.

Module 3 – Curriculum Worksheet

You may print this worksheet and write your answers, or type your answers directly into the digital document. If you choose to type directly in the document, don’t forget to save your work often (to a floppy, hard drive, or other drive local to you). You may wish to print the worksheet for your records when you have completed the survey.

clockEstimated Time: The estimated completion time for the entire module is two hours. Your actual completion time will vary, depending on the topics you choose and your learning pace. It is not necessary to complete the entire module in one sitting. You can easily come back later to wherever you left off and continue your study.
