Increasing numbers of newcomers to the United States are boosting demand for programs that help them improve their ability to understand, write, and speak English. Just as in other adult education programs, EL/ESL students do not necessarily share the same goals. Some want to improve their marketability in the workforce, some strive for further education and degrees, and some are most interested in improving their personal and family lives. Instructors of EL/ESL programs use different methods depending on available resources and on the goals of their students.
